
As the New Year begins, we’re bombarded with messages about making resolutions, setting goals, and transforming ourselves into a "new you." It’s a familiar ritual, but let’s be honest: how often do these resolutions actually stick? By the time February rolls around, many of us have abandoned the gym memberships, left the journals untouched, and reverted to old habits.

The Power of Storytelling
One of the most powerful tools I use in Coaching and Leadership Development is encouraging people to rewrite their internal narrative. Instead of focusing on where you are right now or the things you want to fix, imagine the leader you want to become.
Close your eyes for a moment and step into that vision of yourself. Then ask:
What am I doing as a successful leader?
How do I feel in this role?
How are my team, my clients, or my organisation positively impacted by me?
What am I achieving?
What are others noticing and saying about the changes in me?
This simple exercise can shift your perspective from frustration or self-doubt to possibility and inspiration.

Stepping Into the Shoes of Your Future Self
Once you’ve imagined this version of yourself, the next step is to embody it.
· What does this leader say?
· How do they behave?
· What decisions do they make?
· What boundaries do they set?
By stepping into those shoes, even before you feel "ready," you’re training your mind to align with this new narrative.
This practice isn’t just for leaders – it applies to all areas of life. Whether you’re trying to cultivate healthier habits, improve relationships, or grow in your career, your internal story shapes your external reality.

I was reminded of the power of this exercise recently as I transitioned from being an employed Learning & Development professional to running my own business.
